CONTEXTUALS PRACTICE - Diagnostic Ideas Factory Reflection

Explain why you picked those two visions of our potential COVID future above the others you class mates shared?

I decided to respond to Ruby’s vision because I really liked her idea of the UK becoming more independent rather than relying so much on imports from international countries. Her idea had many benefits such as rebalancing the economy and decreasing pollution. It sparked our biggest conversation during this task because everyone had many questions to ask. One of my concerns was the amount of factories that would need to be built to satisfy independent production in companies however Ruby responded saying that hopefully it would just balance out production rather than increase so it wouldn’t be as concentrated in countries such as China.

Another point I loved was Zack's vision of evolving home design to provide for the world of working at home. He explained that as working for home has become normal now or more frequent for workers, there needs to be a way to separate the ‘at home’ and ‘at work’ feeling to put workers in a good mind space and that greenery and seeing nature increases wellbeing. This sparked another great discussion of hope for our future of work and how it can impact roles and projects. Zack’s idea about the greenery was great but I was concerned about this idea populating more rural areas and that we already have not much space for new houses. However, he responded that it didn’t have to be a rural area but just more greenery planted around houses or rooms of work.

2) What interested you in the example you shared with your classmates? Try to be specific in your explanation?

When thinking about my vision for the future, my mind went straight to the arts industry. Thousands of events have been cancelled or rescheduled due to the current pandemic. Just today, I saw on social media a concert I have purchased tickets for that was rescheduled for January 2021 and has been further rescheduled to September 2021. This is because it is unsafe for people to attend. Also, it’s disheartening to see the behaviour towards the arts industry in the news coming from politicians such as Rishi Sunak stating he thinks it is time for people to adapt and find new jobs. I immediately thought of how creators could help each other to sustain the community by developing the world of socially distanced virtual reality venues. My group responded really well to this idea and loved the concept of keeping everyone all together and making the performing arts inclusive even to people who would’ve never even been able to attend a concert before due to things like disabilities or illnesses.

What ideas or approach to experimental making could you take from this example and incorporate into your own work?

I think I could take into consideration artists creating work to support other creators because it is such an important community that its only right we support each other and create to adapt the world of art for ourselves and other artists. This could be in the likes of product design or architecture or technology development.

How do you feel about communicating with your new classmates in this way? Give an example of how it works and an example of how it doesn't work as well. Please explain why.

I really enjoyed communicating with my classmates in this way because we had interesting and inspiring conversation about our own ideas whilst also asking great questions about each other’s visions. I liked the fact that the conversation was saved in a chat so we had time to think about what the other person had said, and we could structure our questions and answers well. The only thing that was a bit time consuming was waiting for people to type and explain when someone didn’t understand. If we were joined face to face, I feel some of the conversations could’ve happened quicker.
